Brundtland Definition of Sustainable Development

tap to flip

From the 1987 WCED report Our Common Future (chaired by Norwegian PM Gro Harlem Brundtland): development that meets the needs of the present without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Two structural features: (1) reframes ecological limits as an equity problem — inter- and intra-generational; (2) deliberately does NOT specify what stock must be preserved, opening the weak vs. strong sustainability debate. Hussen pp. 309-311.
